Help your organization cope with the
changing scene
Everyone knows that change is inevitable. So,
why are some people the last to willingly accept changes for themselves? The
answer to this and how to help move those people along is contained in a
best-seller, Who Moved My Cheese, by Spencer Johnson, M.D.
There is an expression, "The only people
who like change are wet babies." Well, the trick is to get people to
embrace change as a healthy component for survival. Dr. Johnson gets this point
across in his story of two mice and two "little people" caught in a
maze with dwindling supplies of cheese on which to survive. When Sniff and
Scurry (the two mice) realize they must adapt to change, they approach their
survival strategies in different ways. While Hem and Haw (the two "little
people") each manifest event different reactions to coping with change.
The bad news is that you may find yourself in
this story. The good news is that most people, after reading the story, are
likely to take on a more positive approach to dealing with change.
I will not attempt to reiterate the points made
by Dr. Johnson since it would likely be as incomplete a writing as my trying to
reiterate the bible. Do yourself a favor and be sure to read his book. I do not
receive commissions from promoting his book but would likely gain great wealth
if I were to do so. It is that good. The good news… most people will breeze
through the book in about 1-2 hours. It is also available on cassette tape.
Dr. Johnson is a superb writer of
"practical business advice". He has authored many other gems
including: Yes or No: A Guide to Making Better Decisions. This book does not
assure you it will enable you to make perfect decisions, just better ones. The
reason is that Dr. Johnson knows that most people fail to identify and evaluate
all their available options.
He has also written, with Ken Blanchard, The
One Minute Manager. Dr. Johnson has written several other books on that theme
(The One Minute Mother - Father - Salesperson, etc.). I encourage you to look up
all his writings. You will be the wiser for it.
